June 17, Friday, Sioux Falls, SD

I started day off with a mass at the grotto church of St. Peter and Paul.  Then stopped at Casey’s across the street where I talked with the cashier.  Turns out she was in Kilarney, Ireland for St. Patrick’s Day last year, as was I.   She also gave me the local’s shortcut to Sioux Falls.  Drove thru Emmetsburg, a very Irish town, even the welcome sign was in Gaelic, Wild Rose Casino and Irish store.  An outdoor movie drive-in surprised me on the intersection of 9 & 71.  This way was quiet, good roads and an enjoyable countryside.

Sioux Falls, SD, was a nice break.  The main attraction was the falls where you could get in a good walk around.   A nice park with an overlook bridge and an elevator to view site from 4th floor tower.  I caught the free trolley here for ½ hr. tour of town.
Next stop Mitchell, SD to view the world’s only corn palace.   I was surprised it was sandwiched in the middle of town.  It includes a small place to eat, movie on its history, past pictures of palace and a LARGE gift shop temporarily in its auditorium where they can have guests perform and even basket balls games.
Found my way to the 24 hr. Wal-Mart for a good night sleep along with other campers in the parking lot.   First I needed to pick up some fruit and OJ for breakfast with bread, jam and yogurt.

  1. Tom and I poked our head into that casino as well. There is a great visitor center in Emmetsburg. If you are interested, on your way back, in LaCrosse WI is the national shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Beautiful grounds and breathtaking cafe!
