June 9, 2011 Preparations

My Honda Element layout is all set.   I bought soft window screening which I cut to place outside middle windows and passenger window.   With strong magnets attaching screening there will be no mosquito worries.   For privacy and to keep car cool when parked in a campground, I purchased a roll of Reflectix for $12.   This is easy to cut for fitting inside car windows.    The alternative would have been $160 for Honda's privacy curtains.  Removed one back seat, purchased rug to cover from back of front seat and tail gate when down.   I have already taken a trip to Door County, Wisconsin, in my Element and found the sleeping is great with passenger seat lowered into lowered back seat.  With some VERY thick foam, new sleeping bag, favorite pillow and plastic tubs for stuff I am ready.

Just need to wait for new reflective eye glasses, get house cleaned, laundry and a Hawaiian style birthday party for Maggie with Suzanne, Tom, Solomon and Tom's mom on Saturday.

Back in 1970 I did a similar trip in a Toyota using parts of Route 66 to visit a friend in California.  I ended up taking a southern route thru Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, walked down Grand Canyon for a Halloween stay at bottom, Then hitched thru Mexico to Tulum for three months, finally reached California six months later just in time for Christmas Eve.  Definitely plan to make this trip shorter.

There is no definite itinerary other than head thru Iowa, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and back home.    Retirement is wonderful!!!
